Overview

Selank is a synthetic peptide analogue of the naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin (threonyl-lysyl-prolyl-arginine), with an additional Pro-Gly-Pro sequence. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it has been approved in Russia as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder.

Research has investigated its anxiolytic, nootropic, and immunomodulatory properties.

Mechanism of Action

Selank is believed to influence the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and modulate the balance of monoamine neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It may also affect the enkephalin system and GABA receptor function. Its immunomodulatory effects are thought to relate to its tuftsin-derived structure.

Research Findings

Limited Human Data

Russian clinical studies have reported anxiolytic effects comparable to benzodiazepines without sedation or dependence. Animal studies suggest cognitive enhancement and neuroprotective properties. Some studies report immunomodulatory effects including modulation of cytokine expression. Western peer-reviewed literature is more limited, and large-scale international RCTs are lacking.

Risks & Safety Concerns

Generally reported as well-tolerated in Russian clinical literature. However, independent large-scale safety data is limited. Potential risks include unknown long-term effects, interactions with psychoactive medications, and variable quality of non-pharmaceutical-grade products.

Regulatory & Legal Status

Regulated

Approved in Russia for anxiety treatment. Not approved by FDA or EMA. Available as a research peptide in many other jurisdictions. Not specifically scheduled in most Western countries.
